When is the Best Time to Buy a Laptop? – A Detailed Guide!

With the surge of technology and the need to access the internet for work, the demand for good laptops have skyrocketed. In effect, so have the prices. This is why I would like to give you some ideas on when to find laptops at a more affordable price.

Before digging into that, I want to give you an idea of what specifications to look for in a laptop.

I too went scouting for laptops earlier this year. To be honest, I was completely lost on where to start or what I needed to look for. Luckily I was able to gather some great information that can help you in your hunt as well.

Specifications to look out for

There are five specs to consider when purchasing a laptop. These are the processor, screen size, storage space, RAM, and graphics card.

The processor determines how fast your computer will run. The screen size is relevant for your user experience. Storage space measures the available space on your computer to store files. RAM (Random Access Memory) will affect how many applications can be run at once on your computer. Lastly, the graphics card enhances the graphics of your computer. It is only a necessary spec to have for gaming and professional editing.

Good specs for business or personal use of your laptop would include an i3 or i5 processor, the latter being more efficient, a screen size of 13 inches or more, storage space of at least 256GB, and RAM of 8GB.

For gaming purposes, or advanced editing work, the following specs are recommended. A i7 processor, a larger screen size, storage space of at least 1TB, 16GB – 32GB RAM, and an additional graphics card.

Now that we know what specifications to look for in a laptop we can delve deeper into when the best time would be to purchase one.

When Is The Best Time To Buy A Laptop?

  • Promotional Seasons

Companies have promotions at different times of the year. Most of them follow typical holiday seasons such as Christmas and Easter. For engineering students there are Back-to-school Laptop promotions are also a great time to scout for laptops as they tend to be on special along with other stationary items. Most companies also have a special promotions period on their birthday, the day the company started.

Whenever one of these seasons is approaching, it’s a good idea to start looking at promotion advertisements. You can even check online websites to see which laptops are on special. You can look through local newspapers. Word of mouth is also a great way to find out about local promotions.

If the one you like is on promotion, at a price you are willing to pay, then you have found yourself the perfect time to buy a laptop. If not, luckily, there are more options to look out for.

  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the best time of year to catch amazing deals at many retail shops. Cyber Monday is the e-commerce equivalent to Black Friday. Black Friday is usually on the Friday following Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday on the first Monday after Thanksgiving.

Since 2005 these days have been known for being the busiest shopping days where the most amount of money is spent in a day. Many people save up their money all year to spend on these days because of how affordable promoted items are. Sales can range for up to 70% off and everything in between.

The only issue here could be that if you’re looking for a specific item, it might not be on promotion on those days. If you’re willing to take the chance, it could be a great pay off.

Many companies display their promotions well in advance. Make sure to keep your eyes open during the month of November. This way you won’t miss out on any related promotions.

  • Price Checking Websites

There are many websites online whose main focus is to compare prices of the same item across different retailers. This is a great way to see if the laptop you’re looking for isn’t cheaper at another shop.

Just type into your search engine something along the lines of “price check” with the name of the laptop you’re looking for. There will be ads from different retailers for the item. If you scroll further down there should be search results that include these price checking websites. There will be plenty to choose from.

This is a simple way to take a look at the varying price ranges for a specific laptop. This way you can see which retailer offers the most affordable price.

This will help you make an informed decision. If none of these prices fall into your budget, we still have one more option to explore.

  • Refurbished laptops

Refurbished laptops may sound uninteresting to consider. However, it’s a really great alternative if you’re not too hung up on having brand new items. Refurbished laptops usually include laptops that have been sent back for minor errors, display laptops, or any used laptops. Once returned the software of the laptop is fixed, tested and resold at a much lower price.

The only negative is that it might have some shallow marks. So if you’re not too fussy about the look of the laptop and rather want to focus on it’s function, refurbished laptops are a great option. I also purchased a refurbished laptop earlier this year. I got one with great specs for a much lower price. An important tip would be to make sure that the laptop has a guarantee of at least 3 months.

Now that we’ve explored the best times to buy a laptop it is up to you to decide which option will work best for you.

Would you rather wait it out and search for a brand new laptop when it goes on sale?

Or would you rather look for a refurbished laptop when the price and specs are a match for your needs?
